US (In)Justice System on parade again

by Limbic on January 31, 2014

Remember the two guys who toppled over a rock in Utah and uploaded a video of it to Youtube? It sparked Internet “outrage” and went viral.

The two men involved – Scout leaders at the time – were thrown out of the scouts and vilified.

They claim – and there is absolutely no reason to doubt them – that they thought the ancient rock was a health hazard that could topple on to hikers. They claim they decided to topple it to prevent that happening. In other words their intent was noble even if they were wrong to take matters into their own hands. The other narrative is that of two vandals wantonly destroying an ancient rock formation out of malice.

It is clear to me these two were well intended if misguided. The act was silly but not maliciously so, deserving of censure and possibly a fine. Their firing from the Scouts was bad enough. The internet lynch mob excessive and disgusting as always.

Now the reliably excessive US Justice system is charging the duo with felony charges. They face 5 years in jail.

Ludicrous.
