Korean member attacked and beaten by muggers

by Limbic on November 20, 2009

A Korean member of the Belgrdae Foreign Visitor’s Club,  Kuan, was attacked and beaten last Sunday by multiple cowardly muggers.

Six men a woman brutally attacked him in the early hours of Sunday morning on Zeleni Venac. He bravely fought them off, but was overpowered by so many attackers,  who kicked him brutally as he lay on the ground.

Kuan has been in hospital since then, with serious injuries. He was operated on today (Friday) and reported to one of the members that he was in agony, but he hopes to feel better tomorrow.

This is the latest in a spate of attacks on foreigners, but this is the first mugging I have heard of in Belgrade in years.

Kuan is a professor of Serbian and a long term resident in Belgrade.

We wish him the very best in his recovery and hope that the police will be swift in catching and locking up his attackers.

The Belgrade Foreign Visitors Club will be organising something for Kuan. If you have any ideas of special requests, please put them in the comments.

Terrible news! I wish Kuan a speedy recovery.

Was this reported in the wider press? This is the first I’ve heard of the attack, though I must admit I haven’t really been following the news a lot this week.

personally, I had heard of it from Victor, owner of Tijuana club. i told it to some distant relatives of mine in Belgrade and they had heard/read about it, though they are kind of news-geeks, so I’m not quite sure if hearing it from them counts as “widely reported” or not.

I’m so sad to hear. I wish Kuan a quick recovery and that those muggers get caught soon!

I hope Kuan is now better and over his ordeal.

I have always felt very save in Belgrade and felt comfortable walking the streets at anytime day or night but I am becoming concerned by the number of attacks in recent months.
Just last night a Czech friend of mine, who I share my flat with, was attacked and had her handbag stolen while walking to the shop on Vojvode Stepe at 18:30.
The attacker came up behind my friend and punched her with force on the back of her head, she fell on the pavement injuring herself quite badly, the attacker grabbed her bag and ran off which contained her passport, purse, keys ect. The lady is in her 50’s so this has obviously caused her much mental anguish and well as physical injury not to mention the stolen items.
This along with a few incidents of rape in the near by area as well as the previous assaults on a number of foreigners in Belgrade has left me wondering if I should be more vigilant when out and about; and if that is the case, to question whether I want to live in a place where I need to be constantly on guard looking over my shoulder.
Am I overacting?
