Ubuntu Linux

by Limbic on April 25, 2005

Read about this Linux distribution and could not wait to download it. Anything which is named after one of my favourite words and concepts (I posted about Ubuntu before) is a must for my technical arsenal.

Ubuntu – Linux for Human Beings

“Ubuntu” is an ancient African word, meaning “humanity to others”. Ubuntu also means “I am what I am because of who we all are”. The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support.

The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

These freedoms make Ubuntu fundamentally different from traditional proprietary software: not only are the tools you need available free of charge, you have the right to modify your software until it works the way you want it to.

Ubuntu is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports Intel x86 (IBM-compatible PC), AMD64 (Hammer) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures.

Ubuntu includes more than 1,000 pieces of software, starting with the Linux kernel version 2.6 and Gnome 2.10, and covering every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to internet access applications, web server software, email software, programming languages and tools and of course several games.

Google Maps hits the UK

by Limbic on April 22, 2005

The supremely cool Google maps is now available for the UK. Seems to be missing some of the US functionality (like Satellite map overlays) but it is still in Beta.

From the Institute for War and Peace Reporting:

Both American and Iraqi troops agree that there has been a drop in the number of insurgency attacks over the last few months. There is also a general feeling among the Iraqi population that this is the case.

One of the reasons for this, according to Iraqi government and the American military sources, is the phenomenon of the public becoming more cooperative in providing precise information about insurgents. Until recently, people were very reluctant to do so.

It is claimed that a controversial programme on the state-owned TV station ìAl-Iraqiayaî is responsible for this change in the public mood. The programme has become such a hit that other privately-owned Iraqi TV stations are now showing it as well.

The programme, called Terror in the Hands of Justice, has been shown every evening on prime time TV for the last couple of months. During the course of the hour-long show, ìterroristsî are questioned by interrogators about their activities prior to being captured by Iraqi forces. They give graphic details about their roles in attacks on the police and the army, as well as bombing, beheading, kidnapping and other criminal acts.

Sacfree underwear

by Limbic on April 18, 2005

The latest revolution in underwear design from Germany: The Sacfree .

That’s right fellas, your balls hang free whilst your Johnston (or in my case, Goliath) lives inside.

Looks deeply uncomfortable not to mention utterly idiotic. My guess is that this is a spoof.

The best pair (geddit) has to be 04001 (“The real London look”):

Virus

by Limbic on April 13, 2005

“The fact that two viruses – one with a proven track record of transmitting easily into people and another with a mortality rate of between 50 and 80 percent – are circulating in Asia at the same time is something to keep a very close eye on.” – William L. Aldis
