Yet again the Guardian/Observer is banging the “we need immigrants for the economy” drum ( what Christopher Manion describes as “the reductionist approach addressing only homo economicus”).
“What Europe needs is affirmation of the importance of immigration as being essential to its economic needs and cultural dynamism..[Europe] needs immigrant labour desperately” announces a leader in today’s Observer.
Quite the contrary, what Europe needs is an affirmation of the fact that immigration is incidental to the well being of the economy and potentially a grave threat to its liberal traditions, democracy, cultural cohesion and freedoms.
The Guardian is reiterating the economic argument because it is all it has left. It is the last of their arguments that is not obviously bunk. Macroeconomics is mostly impenetrable to most people, and where there is ignorance propagandists find opportunities to tell lies.
It is deeply ironic seeing a left wing newspaper arguing that putative economic well being trumps social well being. Such is the degradation of the Left that they will sacrifice their core principles for single issues and see no conflict. Doublethink.
Even if mass immigrantion were to bring enormous wealth (which it does not), would the people of Europe - given a choice and knowing the facts - be willing to accept this wealth but with it deracination, minority status, ethnic conflict, disempowerment and ultimately balkanization? I don’t think so.
People are being sold a lie. They are being told their future prosperity is dependent on immigrants. It is a scare story. A lie. Remember we were going to run out of food in the 70’s? The oil was slotted to be gone in the early 80’s? Scare stories.
We have some problems in Europe with declining and aging populations. These problems are easily fixed by increased automation, lengthening working ages etc. The Guardian says there is only one cure - mass immigration. There is only one ideology to guide this mass immigration - multiculturalism ( i.e. non-assimilation and non-acculturation).
This cure is genuinely terrible, far far worse than the minor economic illness is is claiming to meliorate. Don’t be suckered. Demand the facts and know all the consequences for you and your children.
This is THE most important political issue of our times.

Admirably concise and well-argued. Six years later, the left are still pumping out the lies.
