Comprehensive guide to .htaccess

Tutorial written and contributed by Feyd, moderator of the JK Forum. Please see tutorial footnote for additional/bio info on author.

I am sure that most of you have heard of htaccess, if just vaguely, and that you may think you have a fair idea of what can be done with an htaccess file. You are more than likely mistaken about that, however. Regardless, even if you have never heard of htaccess and what it can do for you, the intention of this tutorial is to get you two moving along nicely together.

If you have heard of htaccess, chances are that it has been in relation to implementing custom error pages or password protected directories. But there is much more available to you through the marvelously simple .htaccess file.

Em@ilEncoder 2.0

spam-proof your mailto links

Em@ilEncoder is an anti-spam tool for webamsters or people that own a web site and have their email address posted in public. It allows you to create a spam-proof email link that withstands the extraction tools, that many spammers use to gather email addresses from the web. Em@ilEncoder allows you to enter your email address, an optional subject for the email to be sent and the link text. It then generates a Java code that you can copy and paste into your web pages. The link will work fine with any browser and your visitors will not notice the spam-proof nature of the link, however spam robots will not be able to extract it.

Speak Freely is a 100% free Internet telephone originally written in 1991 by John Walker, founder of Autodesk. After April of 1996, he discontinued development on the program. Since then, several other Internet "telephones" have cropped up all over the world. However, most of these programs cost money. Most of them have poor sound quality, and don't support some of Speak Freely's basic features such as encryption, the answering machine, or selectable compression.

Out of fustration in the shortcomings of the other programs, and even Speak Freely, I decided to implement what I thought were needed features myself, starting in August of 1997. I contacted John Walker, and he agreed to let me officially take over the project. In the spirit of Open Source SoftwareTM, I am licensing this program under the GNU General Public License.
Batch files still are a good way to get things done. As long as the things are simple, a batch file can be exactly the right way to do it: easily written, portable, and no need to install anything to get it to work. There is one big shortcoming of batchfiles though: interactivety. There is hardly a nice way to ask the user questions. In the old days, in MSDOS, there was no way at all to ask questions; then came CHOICE, a very primitive utility to ask Yes/No kind of questions and get an error level back. And that was it.

Now there is the Wizard's Apprentice. It will allow you to ask questions from a batch file, using Windows dialog boxes in the so-called Wizard style: large dialogs asking one question at a time, with a Back button, a Next button and a Cancel button
Splitter & Merger is a tool to split large files into smaller and easy to handle pieces. It offers additional file compression, disk-spanning, path creation, automatic part deletion and more. You can choose to have the program create a self-extracting exe file, that can automatically reunite the split pieces or select the split file from within the interface and merge it. Splitter & Merger comes with an easy to use interface. Download is less than 30k, no install required.

NetPerSec measures the real-time speed of your Internet connection. Different types of connections promise different communication speeds, but what are you actually getting? Due to network traffic, actual speeds are often slower than what is promised. Cable modems are fast unless many of your neighbors are sharing the line; such modems can slow down considerably with a heavy load. How do you know when it's time to switch to DSL? NetPerSec lets you check your connection speed in real time. It monitors all TCP/IP activity to and from the Internet or other networks, and graphs the communication speed. Its dynamic tray icon shows send and receive activity with a bar graph or a histogram. For details, open the program's main window to view current and average send and receive speeds in a configurable, graphical display. You can adjust the sampling rate and the amount of data used to compute the average. NetPerSec was written by Mark Sweeney, and first appeared in PC Magazine January 16, 2001 (v20n02). Source code is included.
