Reading Mark Steyn’s article on a Sudanese problem whereby “foreigners were shaking hands with Sudanese men and causing their penises to disappear” brought to mind an article on Genital Retraction Syndrome (Chinese men imagine their penises are retracting), which was posted on the Memetics list today.
All of this might be placed in context by 2 year old paper published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology called “Emotional Selection in Memes: The Case of Urban Legends”.
It appears this sort of lunacy is more widespread than I thought.
