Not really sure what to think about this. A Danish Muslim girls magazine is running a competition for “Miss Headscarf”. The winner will be featured as a cover girl.
On the one hand I am all for efforts to normalise headscarves and show tolerance for people’s choices of dress ( I mean where is the outrage when people wear tie died T-shirts, or the clinically obese wear cut off t-shirts?)
On the other hand this smacks of a certain absurdity. The whole religious point of Muslim women’s dress is to cover up so an not to provide temptation to men. A beauty pageant on the theme of a religious observance that is deliberately supposed to suppress beauty seem silly.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
