An Italian fashion chain has stoked controversy with an advertisement featuring a naked anorexic woman. The ad, which is intended to raise awareness about eating disorders, is timed to coincide with Milan fashion week. [SPIEGEL ONLINE]
As a way of raising awareness about eating disorders, it works. But if it is targeting teenage girls obsessed with slimming and in danger of developing anorexia, then it is worse than useless.
If the sight of their one withered and starved bodies has no effect on the illness, why would a poster of another anorexic do any better?
In fact, as one anorexia expert warned in the article:
The photo may even encourage anorexic women to lose more weight out of envy for the model
A Benton style gimmick then? Or a serious piece of awareness raising?
