Gin, Television, and "Cognitive Surplus"

This is an absolutely brilliant presentation given by Clay Shirky (author of the new smash hit on organizing Without organizations called  “Here Comes Everybody“) on the topic of “Where do they find the time”. You hear this phrase, usually in response to some report of silly activity or massively time consuming hobby. We Clay knows [...]

Sucker Punch

Carlos Rotella at Slate has a good article on  “The art, the poetry, the idiocy of YouTube street fights” - the posting of online fight videos. He reports from the virtual ”Land of a thousand asswhippings”.
The fight video is a compelling genre and holds a grim fascination for many. There are some great “stories” in some of these [...]

Silent raves

In the early nineties I wrote a dreadful science fiction story set in early 21st century London. In one of the scenes the protagonists find themselves in a flashmob esqe “silent rave” . Not forseeing wi-fi, the mob were tuned into a shared radio frequency and they danced silently whilst puzzelled police looked on.
Well [...]

The economics of Telenovellas

They are HUGE in Serbia. Spanish language schools in Belgrade are full of teenage girls learning Spanish to better follow them. It is the phenomenon of the Telenovella - or Spanish langue soap opera.

Happy Slapping for pervs: Sharking

File under Only In Japan: Crazy Sharkin Compilation shows what appears to be Japanese Sharking. Sharking has nothing to do with sharks plenty to do with running up to random women and pulling down their pants. I presume these are staged (in the UK this would be prosecuted as a sexual assault), but you never [...]

Crush of the week: Jeannie D

Jeannie d (real name Jeannie de Gouveia) is a South African DJ and actress.
Apparently she has an incredibly sexy voice (which matchs her stunning looks) and came in at no. 77 in South African Maxim’s 100 sexiest women issue.
She is so popular, her lipstick stained straw is being auctioned on the Interet [...]

Pictures of New York Nightlife during the 70s

New York Night Life is a series of photos from celebrity nightclubs in New York during the 1970s.  Orgies, gay jitter bugs, naked celebrities…you name it, it all went down. Fascinating. Some not safe for work pictures after the jump and many more at the site.
